Crossing the Bridge

Rudy crossed the bridge this evening after a brief but vicious battle with lymphoma. He was a trooper but in the end we were unable to control his pain. What a special dog he was. We will miss him greatly. He is now free of pain and able to roll in sheep poop and eat poopsicles to his heart's desire.

It's official

It's official - Lego is clear on the fluff test!
CH GRANGEFIELD LYBERTY'S LEGACY
Since Lego's litter mate (Lily - CH Grangefield Aberdovey Lymerick) and 3/4 sister (JoJo - CH. Grangefield Inquistive) both won the nationals, we have been receiving some interest in his use as a stud dog. Both JoJo and Lilly have produced fluffs so I thought it would be a good idea to see if he carried the fluff gene . We learned yesterday the he is fluff free - YAY!

Belated Maryland Post - Rudy Update

I am sure you have all read the posts by Janet (Simple things) and Taryn (A tail of two cardis) describing all the fun we had on our trip to Maryland last weekend. Shirley is a wonderful hostess and a wealth of information on our breed, I am so lucky to have her as a mentor and friend.

Things were hectic when I got home. Rudy had taken a turn for the worse. His lymphoma has spread and we know we will not beat this dastardly disease. He went to the vet for another steroid injection plus a b-12 shot. He has rallied again, and is back to his silly self. We are taking this day by day with the knowledge that we will not be winning this battle (SIGH).

On a happier note, Tank found his forever home while we were visiting Shirley. He is know living with his new family in Fredricksburg, VA. Here is a picture of Tank with his new Mom and Dad!

Taryn took these great pictures of Doolittle and Belle at Shirley's puppy party. I really enjoyed meeting Taryn - this Cardi Blog group is way too much fun! Thanks for the great pictures Taryn! Doolittle and Belle are still looking for their forever homes!

Rudy update

Rudy received a steroid shot when we visited the Vet on Monday. The Vet said it would give him some relief. He sent me home with the a/d food and a big syringe. We made Rudy comfortable on his favorite bed and spent a sleepless night with lots of tears. Tuesday morning we discovered he had gotten up during the night and moved out to the big dog bed in the living room. I prepared his food and loaded the syringe. When I sat down beside him, he raised his head, stuck his nose in the bowl, and scarfed it up! I emptied the syringe into the bowl and got the rest of the can. He scarfed that up too plus a few slices of turkey! After 2 weeks of hardly eating ( which led to force feeding baby food) Rudy ate, on his own and with GUSTO!! Wow, Dr. Harbin wasn't kidding - he does feel better. He ate two more meals of soft dog food and some turkey. He is now walking slowly around the house and yard. This morning, he came into the kitchen and did a slower version of his "happy dance" for breakfast. Why I am sure this is short lived, it did my heart good to see it. Rick has an appointment with Dr. Harbin to discuss options for Rudy on Thursday.

Sad News

Rudy has been diagnosed with Lymphoma. He is comfortable for now, but is not eating. We are sad beyond words. We have never dealt with this before and wonder if there is anything we can do to treat this. Please be honest. Any suggestions on how to make him comfortable would be appreciated.

Encouraging News

Rudy saw Dr. B today and we got encouraging news. As we suspected, he strained his back chasing that D#$% cat. As soon as Dr. B touched him Rudy settled into her hands and let her work her magic. I could see the pain draining away from his face. Dr. B really thinks he can recover from this, but it is going to be a long haul. For at least the next couple of months he will not be going out in the big yard with the rest of the dogs. We are in the process of fencing in a smaller area for him to go out in, but for now he will only go out on a lead. This is an easy task right now, however, as Rudy starts to feel better the challenge will begin.

Stay tuned for new puppy pictures soon.......

Rudy Update

Rudy is showing some improvement - he ate 3 meals of chicken and rice yesterday and walked in the yard to "take care of business " . This morning he wagged his tail and ate a little chicken and rice. He will have another acupuncture/chiropractic treatment as soon as possible. His last treatment really helped. We are trying to get a back door put in our house with a ramped exit for Rudy into a smaller yard (where he can't run very far). He is not out of the woods by a long shot, but man this little dog has spunk!

Rudy

It hurts me to the core to say that Rudy is down in his back again. A few days ago we were outside with all the dogs enjoying the lovely weather we have been having. A neighbor's cat ventured into the yard, and before we could stop him, Rudy was off in a dead run with the rest of the pack. The next day he was sore, but moving around. Now, he only gets up to drink water. We have done all we can for him, but he is not showing much improvement. He is not completely paralyzed but when he does get up, his back legs are very wobbly. The worse thing is he has now stopped eating. I did manage to get him to lick a couple of tablespoons of beef gravy this morning and he is still drinking water. Keep you fingers and paws crossed that he will improve, but I fear the worse.

What not to wear at a dog show (caution)

CAUTION - SOMEWHAT PORNOGRAPHIC!
=
One of the many valuable things I learned in my first confirmation class was when choosing a show outfit be sure to bend over in front of a mirror and see what "hung out" in the front and back!
=
OMG! Did she not feel a breeze!
Since it appears this is a halter dress - bet the Judge got a good view too.
=
I'm not sure where this took place, but I'm thinking (hoping) it was a match -- but then again there is a tent and looks like a PA system in the back.

Rudy Update

Rudy was seen by our Holistic mobile Vet on Monday where he received acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments. Dr. Berschnider's prognosis was optimistic. Yes, he did have some compressed discs, but they weren't terribly bad. She was able to gently ease his spine back into alignment. I swear, I saw it happened on Rudy's face! She gave me several holistic medications - Disc Composition, Turmeel (for inflammation and pain) and Pain Plus (just in case). Rudy was on the Turmeel for several days and will be on the disc comp. for the rest of his life. I am happy to report that Rudy's sparkle is back. He still waits at the stairs for help, but he is back to his old, happy-go-lucky self! Dr. B showed me how to massage his spine and some gentle realignment techniques. Rudy looks forward to his daily massage.

On another note, I went to an knee specialist on Monday. I have had 5 surgeries between both knees and had been told by my local surgeon the only option left would be knee replacements. My husband, who is quite experienced in knee replacements (he has had 3 replacements on the same knee!), insisted I go to his surgeon in Nashville. My results were as good as Rudy's. The surgeon injected each knee with steriods and will be scheduling me for a series of Syn-Vis injections . The hope is this will stave off the replacement surgery for several years. While I am not particularly thrilled at the thought of three more injections in each knee, I want to put off the replacements as long as I can. Getting old is not for sissies!

Stay tuned for more puppy pictures soon!

Lyberty's Sherman Tank

Today's Featured Pup is Lyberty's Sherman Tank - Tank is aptly named as he is the Tank of the litter. He is a brindle pointed Black and White boy. Tank loves to hide in little niches and spring out at the other puppies when they least expect it. To say that Tank loves to play is an understatement! He is very vocal and "talks" to you when you hold him. He has lots of puppy love to share and is looking for his forever home.

Lyberty's Memphis Belle

Today's featured Puppy is Lyberty's Memphis Belle. Belle is a sweet but bossy little girl. It's a good thing she has a southern name as she is the Mouth of the South. Belle is very vocal and loves to howl! She, like her brother Doolittle (yesterday's featured pup) is very brave and she loves to run. Belle is also looking for her forever pet home.
